2020 Lotus Evija First Look: 2,000 Horsepower Electric Supercar
Evija is the most powerful production car ever; a 2000 horsepower electric supercar, and Lotus’ biggest gamble ever.
Lotus is a storied brand, with a long history of producing excellent race cars and even more excellent, if slightly raw and misunderstood sports cars. But this is something new. It’s called the Evija and it’s Lotus’ moonshot attempt at claiming the super car throne.
Lotus has never built a super car before, but looking at the Evija, in person and on paper, you would never know that. It’s gorgeous, striking even in the usually dull silver sheen this one has been adorned with. It has all of the crucial elements of a forward-thinking super car, crazy aerodynamics, gullwing doors and a spaceship cockpit that looks like it’s from 70 years in the future. Though, these are actually the most pedestrian things about the Evija. No, the most forward-thinking feature is the powertrain. The Evija is all-electric.
That’s 2,000 horsepower worth of electric batteries, to be specific, that powers four electric motors, one for each wheel. This setup is also good for a claimed 1,250 pound-feet of torque at 0 RPM, which means all of that power is on tap instantaneously. That makes it the most powerful production car ever, all while being an eco-friendly EV with no emissions.
It weighs 3,700 pounds, with most all of that weight coming from the electric batteries, the majority of which are situated in the rear section of the floor. The means that not only is the majority of the weight down low, which brings down the center of gravity, but it also helps ensure a proper mid-engine super car-like weight distribution, with most of the mass being just behind the driver. While 3,700 pounds doesn’t sound featherlight, in the world of electric cars that is as Lotus-like as is possible, thanks to the entire body being made of carbon fiber.
The sexy bodywork also features an adjustable Formula One-inspired DRS system, which means there is a lot of aerodynamic trickery involved, with plenty of wings and things that move as your velocity increases.
Speaking of velocity, the Evija is fast. Very fast. 0-60 MPH happens in under three seconds, and 0-180 MPH happens in under nine. With that much raw power, the acceleration never relents, regardless of speed. The quoted top speed is currently denoted by Lotus as being 200+ MPH, which sounds pleasant. The electric range, when not driving like a lunatic, is a claimed 250 miles.
Want one? Of course you do, who doesn’t? Well, you’ll have to act fast. Lotus internally dubbed the Evija as “Type 130” during testing, and to celebrate that production is capped at just 130 units, worldwide. Pricing starts from $2,500,000 with an initial deposit of $300,000 required to get an allocation. The full allocation process is detailed in the video above.
