Nissan GT-R R35 Night Drive

Nissan GT-R R35 Night Drive

Nissan GT-R and its launch control system are still as brutal as ever.

Despite being over a decade old, the Nissan GT-R still has a unique charm to it.

Perhaps part of the charm comes from the platform showing its age. The transmission thunks, clunks and bangs into gear at low speed. The VR38DETT V6 engine whirs and whooshes as it spools the twin turbochargers up. And despite years of softening things up, and adding more leather in the interior, it’s uncompromisingly firm.

It’s also uncompromisingly fast, and kicks you in the gut at full force when launch control engages. Using the launch control system back to back is enough to cause gastrointestinal discomfort as your organs are continually rearranged.

A quick night drive with the R35 reinforces all of this. The noises are mechanical, and harsh, but oddly satisfying. Just don’t use launch control too many times in a row, Nissan isn’t responsible for what happens to you, afterwards.
