Filled with special Easter eggs and backed with incredible numbers, Hummer EV shows a lot of promise.

Hummer is back, and that is, seemingly, the smallest surprise surrounding the revival of the iconic nameplate. Set to be sold under the GMC brand, General Motors invited DBFR to a private event in Los Angeles where the two Hummer models, the Pickup and the SUV were on display.

The biggest shock (pun intended) for many is that the Hummer revival is electric, with both models dubbed Hummer EV, but these all-electric rigs are packing some serious firepower under the skin, and showcase a unique mix of rugged off-road readiness and true green car cred. Al Oppenheiser, Chief Engineer of Hummer EV, claims that the goal was to develop the most capable, factory off-road pickup on the market.

Pricing starts from $79,995 for both the Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV, with top-spec Edition 1 models ringing in at a cool 105-grand, and the hardware on display seems to back those prices up.

Entry-level Hummer EV models feature a dual motor all-wheel drive setup, good for a claimed 625 horsepower while higher end models sport a three-motor e-4WD setup that ranges from 830 horsepower in the SUV up to an eye-popping 1,000 horsepower in the top-spec Pickup model.

The astronomical power figures come from General Motors’ Ultium battery system, which bestows the enormous electrified pickup a range in excess of 350 miles, thanks to a gargantuan 200 kWh battery pack. For perspective, that is twice the capacity of the current largest Tesla battery setup fitted to Model X P100D models.

In a clear jab at Tesla’s Ludicrous Mode, Hummer EV features W-T-F Mode. Amusingly, it stands for Watts To Freedom and unleashes the full ferocity of the electric powertrain, catapulting the big behemoth from 0-60 mph in three seconds flat.

Hummer EV SUV supports 300 kW DC fast charging, while the pickup can handle 350 kW fast chargers. In short, GM is claiming an optimum charge rate of about 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

Charging is also where the first of Hummer EV’s many Easter eggs shows up, as the sequential LED headlights and taillights also serve as charging gauges. Plug the Hummer EV in and the LED lighting pulses, showcasing the current state of charge.

Look beyond the zero emissions tech, however, and it’s clear that the Hummer EV is also a serious off-road machine.

The short overhangs give Hummer EV nearly 50° approach and departure angles, so it’s less likely to get hung up while rock crawling.

While 22-inch wheels are standard, an available Extreme Off-Road Package swaps those out for 18’s with beadlocks and chunky 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, though the Hummer team says that the bodywork and chassis can accommodate 37-inch rubber, should you want to do so.

Adaptive air suspension is standard equipment, offering up to 13-inches of travel, which, when the drive mode selector is spun to Extract Mode, raises up six-inches, allowing for up to 16-inches of ground clearance.

Tied into this off-road readiness is another of the Hummer EV’s Easter eggs. Look behind the rear doors and you’ll spy an American flag embedded into the blacked-out roof panel. Form an invisible line straight down from there and peak under the fixed running boards where you will find a thumb’s up embossed into it. An amusing nod to the worst case scenario when off-roading, as long as it remains a thumb’s up and doesn’t turn into a thumb’s down, you’ve done a good job behind the wheel.

More tech abounds, as Hummer EV features General Motors’ semi-autonomous Super Cruise technology, allowing for hands-free motoring, including lane changes, during interstate expeditions.

Perhaps the most interesting tech of all is the CrabWalk feature. Hummer EV features four-wheel steering, allowing the 86-inch-wide Hummer to navigate tighter spaces. However, in CrabWalk mode it will steer all four wheels in the same direction, up to 10°, allowing the Hummer EV to traverse even tighter gaps diagonally, at low speeds.

Lockheed Martin approached General Motors to form a partnership and help development of the next-generation electric moon buggy as part of NASA’s Artemis Program. Take two guesses on what kind of tech GM is bringing to the table there.

And that partnership, along with the theme of lunar exploration, is where more of Hummer EV’s Easter eggs manifest, with interior themes like Lunar Horizon and Lunar Shadow being available, as well as smaller touches like imagery of Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the moon’s surface embossed into the speaker grilles (along with his space suit footprint found on the driver’s dead pedal).
